EtherNet/IP is the Industrial Ethernet standard of the ODVA (Open DeviceNet Vendor Association). EtherNet/IP is based on Ethernet TCP/IP and UDP/IP. IP stands for Industrial Protocol. The CIP (Common Industrial Protocol) used in ControlNet and DeviceNet is essentially transmitted on Ethernet TCP/IP and Ethernet UDP/IP. EtherNet/IP supports cyclic and acyclic message transmission and was originally developed for the networking of controllers. It is now also being used increasingly at field level below PLC controllers. The typical topology structure is star shaped.
